Researching Employers

Researching potential employers can make your email, resume, and interview stand out as a perfect match for the employer's needs. Employers appreciate job candidates who have an understanding of the company structure, products and services, history and workplace culture. A lack of company knowledge gives the impression you're not really interested in the job. Knowing the company profile allows you to clearly demonstrate how you'll fit into the company structure and meet the needs of the job profile.

Employer research refines your job search. Research should occur before the 1st contact. By learning more about potential employers you can eliminate those that are not a good match due to job requirements, inadequate pay, geographic issues, or corporate philosophy and culture. This allows you to focus your energies on fewer cover letters and resumes.

Who do "YOU" want to work for? Use research to target desirable employers and be in full control of your job search. Select a specific industry, or search based on your experience and interest. Use career and occupation guides to identify industries that hire people with your skills. Research selected companies using the tools outlined below and then target your job search to those companies.

Every cover letter and resume should be tailored to your researched employer profile. If your resume does not match an employer's needs, they won't be calling or scheduling an interview. Targeted individualized letters are more effective than a generic form letter. If an employer likes the cover letter they'll move on to the resume, if not both will go to the recycle bin.

Research prepares you for tough interview questions. Most employers will expect you to arrive knowing the company's background information. Be prepared to answer typical interview questions such as "Why you would like to work for this company?" and "What could you bring to this organization?" Interviews often end with employers asking if the job candidate has any questions. Asking intelligent and appropriate questions demonstrates your interest in the company and your attention to detail.

Start with the employer's website. If you don't have the employer's url- go to Google and search for the full company name. Some employer websites are packed with useful information, some offer minimal details. If appropriate, refer to the website during your interview. It demonstrates you cared enough about the position to do research. Don't point out any website errors- spelling, design or programming unless it relates to the job position you're applying for and you're asked for your honest opinion of the site. Take notes:

  • Company profile: Sometimes labeled as an "about" link, this page typically provides a history and a synopsis of the company philosophy and culture.
  • News and Press releases: Gather information on major successes, goals, and new projects or areas where you would be a useful addition to the company.
  • Mission statements or Services: Play to their interests by using their language, their priorities when describing yourself in a customized cover letter.
  • Annual report: Read carefully and analyze for any details on strategic plans.
  • Jobs Postings: Review any application instructions and follow them to the letter.
  • Analyze the web design for clues to corporate culture: Is the site design conservative or creative and daring? Is it well organized and logical, or chaotic? The website typically reflects the organization's self image. However, sometimes a company gets stuck with a bad design job so don't over rely on your website impressions.
